The Receptacle

Sunday 15 October. Waldegrave Hall. (continued) - It is a quarter past eleven and the entire household has ostensibly retired for the night, except perhaps for the spectre of Emily Waldegrave, which lingers somewhere, undoubtedly intent on further harm. What should have been a pleasant evening, celebrating the homecoming of Mr Henry, whom I now find both charming and intriguing, was regrettably marred by three things. The sullen, tempestuous manner of Mrs Isadora Marsh, whose excessive intake of claret wine served only to intensify her churlish behaviour, particularly towards Miles, who had to lecture her on one occasion. The disturbing news that Mr Andrew, fighting alongside a large number of other British troops in South Africa, has been besieged by the enemy in the garrison town of Ladysmith, which cannot be relieved at present. And last but not least, a startling demonstration of the unearthly powers of Emily Waldegrave that culminated in a chilling message, intended for Mrs Marsh, which I found inscribed in a layer of sugar.

The message, ‘He is still my husband Isadora Leave him be’, I had immediately erased, lest it exacerbated an already grim situation. Seemingly, Mrs Isadora Marsh has unwittingly angered the spirit of Emily Waldegrave, who appears to resent the fact that Isadora, her former friend, may be seeking to gain the affections of her mortal husband, Mr Henry, who, incidentally, has no designs on Mrs Marsh at all. However, if this be the case, why should Emily Waldegrave, who had flagrantly spurned the love of her husband during life, now be bent on preventing a possible union between Mr Henry and Mrs Marsh, or, for that matter, any other woman who might be attracted to him?

Jealously could be the root cause, but that is too obvious an answer. Vindictiveness, perhaps? Yes, that typifies the character of Emily Waldegrave. Therefore, consumed by a wicked desire to inflict punishment on Mr Henry, whom she despises, she intends to exact a terrible revenge by intimidating his female admirers, thereby depriving him of a potential marital relationship and condemning him to widowhood for the remainder of his natural life. Paradoxically, the one saving grace of this frightful situation is Mrs Marsh herself. Whilst she remains at Waldegrave Hall, the phantom of Emily Waldegrave will be occupied in its effort to drive her from the house. And by demonstrating its wish to do so, the malevolent apparition has inadvertently revealed to me its Achilles heel. Similar to mortals, it can only perform one task at a time. But more importantly, in order to frighten away those women who might be drawn to Mr Henry, it must temporarily abandon its scheme to possess Miles.

A spine-chilling scream, immediately followed by the barking of a dog, which emanates from the west wing corridor, halts any further entry in the diary. Alarmed by the disconcerting sounds, Eleanor quickly sets down her pen, closing her diary. Hurriedly pulling on her sable collared coat over her cotton nightgown, she rushes from her bedchamber, determined to learn the reason for the disturbance.
